“Lost in Translation” (ロスト・イン・トランスレーション), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2004, Ultra Rare B1 Size (c. 72.8 × 103 cm)
This is an original Japanese B1 poster printed in 2004 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation (ロスト・イン・トランスレーション).
Film background
Lost in Translation (2003) is a quietly devastating comedy‑drama written and directed by Sofia Coppola. Set largely inside the Park Hyatt Tokyo, it follows aging American movie star Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and recent philosophy graduate Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) as they drift through sleepless nights and neon‑lit days in a city they don’t quite understand. What begins as a chance meeting in a hotel bar becomes an intimate, melancholic connection as both characters question their marriages, careers and sense of self.
The film was a critical and commercial success worldwide, praised for its delicate performances, mood‑driven storytelling and evocative use of Tokyo as both backdrop and character. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and received additional Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Murray, while also taking home BAFTA and Golden Globe awards.
Poster design
This B1 design uses one of the film’s most iconic images: Bob Harris sitting in a yukata on the edge of his hotel bed, framed by the glowing night skyline of Shinjuku through the window behind him. The warm amber tones of the room contrast with the blurred, electric city lights outside, perfectly capturing the film’s mood of jet‑lagged isolation and quiet longing. Japanese text across the top highlights the film’s major award nominations and wins, while the title ロスト・イン・トランスレーション and English logo run elegantly along the bottom. The large B1 format gives the image real impact on the wall, immersing you in the stillness of that hotel room.
Rarity and condition
This B1 is an ultra‑rare format for Lost in Translation and is extremely elusive on the market. It was printed in much smaller numbers than the standard B2, and we have never had this poster in stock before. As a Japanese poster for a film actually set in Tokyo – with the real Park Hyatt hotel clearly visible in the artwork – it has a special resonance; the hotel itself is only a short walk from our offices.
The poster is in very good / excellent condition. Please refer carefully to the imagery provided, as it shows the exact poster that is for sale.
