“Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack” (機動戦士ガンダム 逆襲のシャア), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1988, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) B158 A

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1988 for the first theatrical release of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack (機動戦士ガンダム 逆襲のシャア).

Film background

Directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, Char’s Counterattack is the long‑awaited cinematic climax to the original Universal Century Gundam saga that began with the 1979 TV series. Set in U.C. 0093, the film pits Amuro Ray and his RX‑93 ν Gundam against Char Aznable, now leader of Neo Zeon, who plans to drop asteroids on Earth in a radical attempt to force humanity into space. With large‑scale mobile suit battles, complex political conflict and a tragic, operatic finale, the movie is regarded as one of the high points of the entire Gundam franchise and a cornerstone of 1980s mecha anime.

Poster design

The B2 artwork delivers an explosive, dramatic composition. The towering ν Gundam dominates the upper half of the image, its V‑fin glowing against a star‑filled backdrop, while Char’s red Sazabi and fleets of mobile suits streak into battle across space. In the foreground, Amuro, Char and key supporting characters are arranged in a sweeping arc that leads the eye toward Earth itself, emphasising the galactic scale of the conflict. The rough, blood‑red “GUNDAM” title brushstroke across the bottom adds urgency and energy, perfectly matching the film’s apocalyptic tone.

Rarity and condition

Original 1988 Japanese posters for Char’s Counterattack are increasingly sought after by Gundam fans and vintage anime collectors, especially as the film continues to inspire new generations of viewers and model‑kit builders. Many surviving copies show heavy cinema wear, making well‑preserved examples harder to source.

This particular poster is in very good / excellent condition for its age. Colours remain strong and the image area presents beautifully, with some age‑related spotting and edge wear, including small chips and roughness around the lower right border, consistent with original theatrical use. Please refer carefully to the photos, as they show the exact item for sale.
