“Monster’s Ball” (チョコレート), Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 2002, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA777

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 2002 for the first Japanese release of Monster’s Ball, the acclaimed American drama directed by Marc Forster and starring Halle Berry, Billy Bob Thornton, Heath Ledger, and Peter Boyle. For its Japanese release, the film was marketed under the simplified title チョコレート (Chocolate).

A deeply affecting and emotionally charged work, Monster’s Ball is widely remembered as one of the most important American dramas of the early 2000s. This Japanese poster is especially striking for its restrained, elegant design, which reflects the film’s intimate and painful emotional register rather than presenting it as a conventional romance.

Film background
Originally released in 2001, Monster’s Ball tells the story of Hank Grotowski, a deeply embittered and prejudiced corrections officer working on death row, and Leticia Musgrove, a struggling African-American woman whose husband has recently been executed. Following separate personal tragedies, the two encounter one another by chance and gradually begin a difficult relationship rooted in grief, guilt, loneliness, and the search for human connection.

Directed by Marc Forster, the film was praised on release for its uncompromising performances and emotional seriousness. It remains historically significant above all for Halle Berry’s Academy Award-winning performance: in 2002, she became the first Black woman to win the Oscar for Best Actress, a landmark achievement in film history. She also received the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival, and the film earned further recognition for its screenplay and performances.

Poster design
The Japanese B2 design is unusually refined and minimalist, making powerful use of negative space. The upper section features a warm-toned still of Leticia, working at a diner counter, looking intently across at Hank. The image is quiet and emotionally loaded, capturing the fragile, uncertain beginning of their connection.

At left, a dark flowing graphic shape descends into the white field below, suggestive of melted chocolate, visually tying the poster to the Japanese release title. Within this form appears the haunting line:

「たかが愛の、代用品。」
“Merely a substitute for love.”

To the right, another block of Japanese text summarises the emotional premise of the film, describing it as a story of a man and a woman reclaiming their lives through love after profound loss.

The lower half of the poster is dominated by a broad open field of white, giving the sheet an unusually spacious, contemplative quality. Rather than crowding the design, the distributor uses this space to highlight the film’s awards and prestige. Most prominent is the reference to the 2002 Academy Award for Best Actress, accompanied by a gold Oscar statuette graphic, together with additional mentions of recognition from the Berlin International Film Festival and the National Board of Review.

At the bottom, the Japanese title 「チョコレート」 is rendered in a delicate, understated type treatment above the cast and production credits. The overall effect is sober, elegant, and unusually mature for a Japanese release poster of the period.
