“Rebecca” (レベッカ), Original Re-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1982, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O695
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1982 for a theatrical re-release of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca (レベッカ)—the Academy Award-winning gothic romance / mystery adapted from Daphne du Maurier’s celebrated novel, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine (with Judith Anderson as the unforgettable Mrs Danvers).
Film background
Released in 1940 and produced by David O. Selznick, Rebecca follows a young woman who marries the wealthy widower Maxim de Winter and moves to his grand estate, Manderley—only to find herself living in the shadow of his late first wife, “Rebecca.” As the new Mrs de Winter struggles with insecurity, class tension, and the chilling power of memory, Hitchcock turns a love story into an atmosphere-heavy psychological mystery that helped define the “gothic” screen tradition.
Poster design
This Japanese re-release design leans into pure noir-romance mood: a close, intimate black-and-white embrace (Olivier and Fontaine) set against an ominous tree-lined drive, with a torn “page” element hinting at the novel’s literary origin. The bold red katakana title 「レベッカ」 slices across the lower portion like a dramatic credit card, while the pink copy at the top explicitly positions du Maurier alongside the great classics (and nods to the film’s prestige and awards), making this an unusually elegant, collector-grade Japanese campaign piece for one of cinema’s most influential love-mysteries.
