SAMURAI REBELLION – Original 1967 Japanese B1 Commercial Tie-In Poster (“Mifune · Nakadai Famous Duel Scene Collection” / Alinamin A) – Masaki Kobayashi – Circa 73 × 103 cm ZA1080

Sale price $270.00

An original Japanese B1 commercial tie-in promotional poster for Masaki Kobayashi’s Samurai Rebellion, issued in the film’s original release year, 1967. The film was released in Japan by Toho on 27 May 1967.

Unlike the more familiar Japanese B2 theatrical format, this is the larger B1 size, measuring 728 × 1,030 mm (approximately 73 × 103 cm). This example is especially distinctive as a period crossover advertising piece, combining film promotion with prominent Alinamin A branding as part of its original design.

About the Film (Samurai Rebellion)

Released in 1967, Samurai Rebellion is Masaki Kobayashi’s powerful jidaigeki drama, adapted by Shinobu Hashimoto from a story by Yasuhiko Takiguchi. Set within the rigid structures of feudal Japan, it follows Isaburō Sasahara as an enforced marriage arrangement and later clan interference drive him toward open defiance. The film was widely acclaimed and received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 28th Venice International Film Festival.

Kobayashi balances domestic tragedy, samurai honour, and a severe critique of oppressive social order, building toward the fateful confrontation between Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai that this poster so vividly advertises. It remains one of the director’s most admired late 1960s works.

This single-sided piece features Samurai Rebellion prominently:

Front (printed side): A dramatic black-and-white photographic design dominated by large images of Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai, with the title 上意討ち running vertically at right. Across the top is a strip of duel-scene stills, while the bold red headline reads 三船・仲代 決闘名場面集 (“Mifune · Nakadai: Famous Duel Scene Collection”). The lower left carries additional cast portraits and a large Alinamin A advertisement, making this an especially unusual and visually striking period tie-in poster.

Note: This is not a standard single-title theatrical design in the usual sense, but an original period promotional / commercial tie-in poster combining Toho film advertising with Alinamin A branding. That hybrid format is part of the poster’s original character and collector appeal.
