“Scared Stiff” / 「底抜けびっくり仰天」, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1954, Dean Martin / Jerry Lewis / Carmen Miranda, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) D300
This is an ultra-rare original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Scared Stiff / 「底抜けびっくり仰天」, printed for the film’s original Japanese release in 1954.
This is a remarkable piece of mid-century Japanese cinema advertising, produced during the golden era of the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis comedy partnership. Original 1950s Japanese B2 posters for Martin and Lewis titles are extremely difficult to find, particularly in this level of preservation.
Film background
Directed by George Marshall, Scared Stiff stars Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Lizabeth Scott, and Carmen Miranda. The film is a horror-comedy remake of The Ghost Breakers, blending haunted-house mystery, Caribbean adventure, slapstick comedy, musical performance, and the Martin and Lewis double-act at the height of their popularity.
The film follows nightclub performers who become entangled in a mystery involving a supposedly haunted castle on an island. It is classic Martin and Lewis material: broad physical comedy, musical interludes, romantic complications, and playful supernatural suspense.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 poster is a superb example of 1950s Shōwa-era illustrated film advertising. The composition is built around a giant stylised ghost-sheet, from which the painted faces of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis emerge in exaggerated comic terror.
The Japanese title 「底抜けびっくり仰天」 is rendered in enormous red hand-brushed calligraphy across the centre, giving the poster its greatest graphic force. The lettering feels deliberately unstable and animated, perfectly matching the film’s tone of comic panic and “shock” humour.
The upper yellow headline promotes the film as the latest explosive comedy from the popular duo, while the lower section names Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, with supporting credits for Lizabeth Scott and Carmen Miranda. Smaller painted character scenes at the bottom add further colour and theatricality, including comic full-body figures and Carmen Miranda in her flamboyant screen persona.
The overall design is playful, spooky, and beautifully period-specific: a hand-painted ghost comedy image, vivid red Japanese calligraphy, and 1950s studio-era illustration work of the kind no longer produced in modern digital poster design.
Authenticity and age
The reverse photograph shows visible ink bleed-through, especially from the heavy red title pigment. This is a desirable and highly characteristic feature of many authentic vintage Japanese posters from the period, where dense ink application and thinner paper stock allow elements of the front design to ghost through over time.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition for its age. Please review the photographs carefully, as they show the exact poster for sale.
The poster presents exceptionally well for a Japanese theatrical poster now around seven decades old, with strong colour, vivid red title calligraphy, charming illustrated character work, and excellent overall display impact. There are visible fold lines and light signs of age, storage, and handling consistent with an original 1950s B2 cinema poster.
The reverse shows natural age toning and ink bleed-through, consistent with the poster’s period printing and authenticity.
