This is an original Japanese B2 poster, printed in 1980, for advertising a limited, theatre‑specific science‑fiction screening series titled 「空想科学ムービーランド」 (“Science‑Fiction Movie Land”). Rather than a nationwide film campaign, this sheet was produced to promote a special repertory engagement at 名画座ミラノ (Meigaza Milano) in Shinjuku—built around three immortal 1950s American sci‑fi titles, presented as a curated “event” with upgraded sound.

What this poster was displayed for (translated context)

The design and copy make it clear this was a program/event poster for a Tokyo repertory cinema run, with three films shown in consecutive two‑week engagements:

  • 禁断の惑星 (Forbidden Planet) — 4/25 (Sat) → 5/8 (Fri)

(This Island Earth) — 5/9 (Sat) → 5/22 (Fri)

(Creature from the Black Lagoon) — 5/23 (Sat) → 6/5 (Fri)

Venue line at the bottom:

  • 名画座ミラノ = “Meigaza Milano” (literally “Milano repertory cinema”)

4F = “Shinjuku Kabukichō, Milano‑za Theatre, 4th floor” (the location of the cinema)

Key headline copy (top):

“Suddenly!! The future has returned from the past!!”
    (A perfect, tongue‑in‑cheek hook for ‘50s sci‑fi rediscovered.)

Right‑side vertical copy:

  • 「衝撃の新音響方式『ウルトラ・サウンド』が不朽の名作を甦らせた!これを観ずにSF映画は語れない!」
“A startling new sound system—‘Ultra Sound’—has revived these immortal masterpieces! You can’t talk about sci‑fi cinema without seeing this!”

Film taglines on the artwork include (examples):

  • 「今から250年後には人類は他の世界へ植民を開始する!」
“250 years from now, humanity will begin colonizing other worlds!”

“Extinction—or conquest? Earthmen are swept into a ferocious war that feels like the end of the universe!”

Poster design and artist highlight

This is not a standard “one‑film” key art sheet—it’s a bespoke illustrated mash‑up created to sell the experience of a sci‑fi season:

  • The composition fuses three instantly readable icons into a single cosmic tableau:
the Gill‑Man (Creature), the sleek space‑age heroine/robot imagery (Forbidden Planet), and the bulbous‑headed alien/brain‑tech menace (This Island Earth).

  • The typography is deliberately monumental: oversized, three‑dimensional red kanji with deep yellow shadowing, giving the title real “marquee power” from a distance—ideal for lobby display.

  • Most importantly for collectors: the sheet carries a printed credit:
    “Design and Illustration: MASAYUKI IZUMI”
That on‑poster credit is a major plus—confirming this was a commissioned design rather than a generic re‑use of studio art.

Why it’s comparatively rare

Unlike a national theatrical poster campaign (printed in large numbers and distributed across Japan), this is the kind of localised repertory/event advertising that was:

  • produced for one venue / one seasonal program,

  • posted for a short window, then discarded,

  • and far less likely to survive in top condition.

That “limited engagement” nature—plus the named designer credit—makes it a particularly desirable crossover piece for collectors of Japanese graphic design, mid‑century sci‑fi, and cinema ephemera.
