"Shane (シェーン)" STB, Original Re‑Release Japanese Poster 1962, STB Tatekan Size (c. 51 × 145 cm) O351
This is an original Japanese STB (tatekan‑style two‑panel) poster printed in 1962 to promote the first Japanese re‑release of Shane (1953), George Stevens’s landmark western starring Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur, Van Heflin, and Brandon de Wilde (with Jack Palance as the hired gun). The film won the Academy Award for Cinematography for Loyal Griggs and is widely cited among the finest westerns.
This 1962 STB for the first re-release of one of the most iconic Western films is very rare.
Why 1962 (not 1970): Japan’s National Film Archive records revival campaigns for Shane in 1962, 1970, and 1975. The 1962 campaign used layouts with a bold yellow 3‑D “シェーン” title and horizontal copy across the sky—exactly the style of this STB and the contemporaneous 1962 B2 poster. By contrast, the 1970 STB features a white beveled title and vertical red copy at right.
Tagline (top, translated):
「悠久と流れる名画の余韻!」 — “The lingering resonance of a timeless masterpiece!”
「名作西部劇の命脈は、新たたにその鼓動を開始した!」 — “The lifeblood of the classic western begins to beat anew!”
「シェーンは帰って来た! 遥かなる山の彼方から—」 — “Shane has returned—from beyond the distant mountains—”
「総天然色」 — “In Technicolor.”
Design notes:
A dramatic two‑sheet vertical composition. The upper panel is an open sky with the massive yellow block “シェーン” title and sweeping taglines. The lower panel presents the iconic scene of Shane in buckskin on horseback gently tousling Joey’s hair, set before the snow‑capped Teton Range—a location central to the film’s visual poetry.
