“The Red and the Black” (赤と黒 / Le Rouge et le Noir), Japanese Re-Release STB / Tatekan Poster Shōwa 41 (1966), STB / Tatekan (c. 51 × 145 cm) P193

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese STB / tatekan signboard poster issued for the Shōwa 41 (1966) Japanese re-release of The Red and the Black (赤と黒), the French-Italian period drama directed by Claude Autant-Lara, based on Stendhal’s famous novel (Le Rouge et le Noir). Starring Gérard Philipe with Danielle Darrieux, this is a superb example of mid-century Japanese cinema signage paper—large-format, highly graphic, and increasingly scarce in strong condition.

Film background
A classic of French literary cinema, The Red and the Black follows the ambitious young Julien Sorel as he attempts to climb the social ladder in Restoration-era France, moving through love, power, scandal, and ultimately tragedy. Autant-Lara’s adaptation is known for its prestige period staging and psychological tension—an enduring title for collectors of European art cinema and Stendhal adaptations.

Poster design
A magnificent, vertical two-panel composition designed for maximum theatre visibility: the upper imagery focuses on glamorous close-ups and dramatic romance, while the lower section shifts into period intrigue and confrontation—carriages, uniforms, and the social world Julien attempts to penetrate. The huge Japanese title 赤と黒 dominates the centre in bold red and black typography, giving the STB an unmistakable, authoritative presence on the wall. The design balances “continental” star glamour with historical drama stakes—very much the Japanese marketing language for European prestige cinema of the era.

About STB (Tatekan) posters
STBs (tatekans) are tall, two-panel Japanese cinema signboard posters measuring roughly 51 × 145 cm (often also cited around 20 × 58 in / 50.8 × 147.3 cm). Formed from two B2 sheets and intended for display in signboards and theatre units, they were made for visibility rather than permanence—which is why surviving examples are so prized by collectors today.
This example survives as two separate B2 sheets (not joined), exactly as many were originally supplied to cinemas.
