“Space Adventure Cobra” / コブラ (1982) – ORIGINAL JAPANESE B2 THEATRICAL POSTER – BUICHI TERASAWA / OSAMU DEZAKI – B2 SIZE (51 × 73 cm) A292
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1982 for the first Japanese release of Space Adventure Cobra: The Movie, the landmark sci-fi anime feature based on Buichi Terasawa’s celebrated manga and directed by Osamu Dezaki.
A defining title of early-1980s Japanese science-fiction animation, Cobra occupies a special place in anime history. Stylish, irreverent, and visually bold, the film distilled Terasawa’s space-opera world into a grand theatrical format, combining futuristic action, pop-art glamour, and the cool anti-hero charisma that made Cobra one of the era’s most enduring characters.
Film background
Released in 1982, Space Adventure Cobra: The Movie was the first feature-length animated film adaptation of Terasawa’s manga. The story follows the wandering space outlaw Cobra, armed with his legendary Psychogun, as he becomes entangled in an intergalactic conflict involving the Royal sisters, treasure, and a powerful criminal conspiracy.
The film is especially admired for its combination of lush science-fiction design, cinematic direction, and a distinctly mature, cosmopolitan tone that set it apart from many contemporary anime productions. It also remains notable for its technical ambition, including its promotion as an early Dolby Stereo anime release.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 is one of the most iconic posters produced for the film and captures the full appeal of Cobra’s flamboyant space-adventure aesthetic.
The upper half is dominated by Cobra’s great spacecraft, rendered in sharply detailed metallic tones against a deep black starfield. Below it, Cobra himself commands the composition in his unmistakable red costume, cigarette clenched in his mouth, with his left arm extended to reveal the famous Psychogun. To one side stands his sleek android companion Lady Armaroid, while on the other appears one of the film’s heroines with silver-blue hair and blaster in hand. Smaller spacecraft and a field of stars reinforce the poster’s expansive galactic setting.
At the top, bold Japanese copy announces the film’s action and technical spectacle, including the promotion of 4-channel Dolby Stereo sound and 3-D visual effects. The lower title treatment is particularly strong: the name コブラ appears in large, highly graphic red lettering, with SPACE ADVENTURE printed beneath in crisp Roman capitals. The overall result is a superb fusion of anime illustration, retro-futurist design, and theatrical impact.
For collectors of anime posters, this is an especially desirable design because it presents Cobra in his definitive heroic form, supported by the film’s central cast and spacecraft imagery in a single, dramatic composition.
