"Streets of Fire", Original Japanese First Release Movie Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N71A
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1984 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Streets of Fire (ストリート・オブ・ファイヤー), Walter Hill’s stylised “rock & roll fable” produced by Universal. The film stars Michael Paré, Diane Lane, Rick Moranis, Amy Madigan, and Willem Dafoe, and has long enjoyed a particularly strong cult following in Japan, where its mix of neon noir, leather-jacket cool, and powerhouse music found an especially receptive audience.
Film background
Released in 1984, Streets of Fire occupies a distinctive place in 1980s American cinema. Directed by Walter Hill, it blends elements of the Western, action film, rock musical, and comic-book fantasy into a deliberately heightened urban myth. The plot follows ex-soldier Tom Cody (Michael Paré), who returns to his old neighbourhood to rescue rock singer Ellen Aim (Diane Lane) after she is abducted by the biker gang led by Raven Shaddock (Willem Dafoe). Though its original American box-office performance was modest, the film has since become a major cult classic, admired for its visual style, mythic simplicity, and exceptional soundtrack, including “Nowhere Fast,” “I Can Dream About You,” and “Tonight Is What It Means to Be Young.”
Poster design
This Japanese B2 is an especially striking design and differs markedly from many Western campaign posters by placing heavy emphasis on Michael Paré’s screen presence. The main image is a large, intense close-up of Tom Cody, his gaze fixed directly at the viewer as he grips a shotgun, projecting the film’s hard-edged, mercenary heroism. In the lower right appears Ellen Aim in performance, spotlighted at the microphone in her vivid red stage dress, introducing the musical energy that is central to the film’s identity. Across the top runs the Japanese tagline: 「この夏、ミステリアスな瞳を持ったニュー・ヒーロー誕生!」 (“This summer, a new hero with mysterious eyes is born!”), a line that clearly foregrounds Paré’s brooding image for the Japanese market. The title 「ストリート・オブ・ファイヤー」 is rendered boldly across the lower portion in a powerful orange-red block design, giving the sheet strong visual impact and excellent display character.
