“Swing Kids” (スウィング・キッズ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1993, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) A251

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1993 for the first Japanese release of Swing Kids, the American musical drama directed by Thomas Carter and starring Robert Sean Leonard, Christian Bale, and Frank Whaley.

Set in Nazi Germany in the late 1930s, Swing Kids has developed a lasting following for its vivid fusion of youth rebellion, jazz culture, and wartime political pressure. The film explores how music, dance, and friendship become forms of resistance for a group of teenagers drawn to the forbidden freedom of American swing.

Film background
Released in 1993, Swing Kids follows a group of Hamburg youths whose passion for jazz and swing dancing places them increasingly at odds with the authoritarian demands of the Nazi state. At its centre are Peter, Thomas, and Arvid, young friends forced to confront the tension between personal freedom, conformity, and survival.

The film is especially remembered for its energetic dance sequences, powerful soundtrack, and for featuring an early screen performance by Christian Bale. Over time it has become a notable cult title among collectors of music, youth-culture, and wartime cinema memorabilia.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 features one of the film’s most memorable campaign images: a dynamic swing-dance scene rendered largely in high-contrast black-and-white, with the woman’s dress and shoes picked out in striking red. This selective use of colour gives the design immediate visual force, turning the poster into both a romantic image and a graphic statement of defiance.

The top catchphrase reads:

「ジャズが生命。踊ることが武器。戦火の中で燃えた若者たちの詩。」
Jazz is life. Dancing is a weapon. A poem of young people who burned amid the fires of war.

At the bottom, the bold English title SWING KIDS appears in large white lettering, with the Japanese title スウィング・キッズ beneath. The overall design is clean, dramatic, and highly effective—capturing both the joy of dance and the tension of the historical setting.
