A hallucinatory explosion of colour and form, this poster epitomises Yokoo’s late-’80s period of maximalist optical energy and surrealist collage. A kaleidoscope of radiating pink and green rays bursts from the centre, anchored by a Saturn-like planetary ring system. Scattered throughout are Yokoo’s signature dreamlike motifs — disembodied eyes, pointing hands, fragmented figures, and enigmatic objects like a silver spoon — each layered over richly patterned backgrounds. The composition invites the viewer into an overwhelming visual field that merges Pop art vibrancy with metaphysical symbolism.

One of Japan’s most famous graphic designers, Tadanori Yokoo is celebrated worldwide for his groundbreaking posters and album covers for artists such as The Beatles, Miles Davis, and Carlos Santana. His psychedelic, collage-driven style blends traditional Japanese iconography with Western pop culture, Surrealism, and experimental typography. First recognised internationally in the 1968 MoMA exhibition Word and Image, Yokoo’s work often incorporates provocative cultural symbols — from the rising sun to Mount Fuji — juxtaposed in unexpected ways. A transformative journey to India further enriched his visual language, infusing his compositions with Buddhist and mystical elements.

This particular poster was created for Yokoo’s 1989 exhibition at the Nishiwaki City Okayama Museum of Art, running from 8 December 1989 to 28 February 1990 — a period regarded as one of his most experimental and visually intense.
