This is an original 1989 offset print by legendary Japanese graphic designer Tadanori Yokoo, created for his solo exhibition TOTAL GRAPH - T.Y. held at the Seiyu department store. The work encapsulates Yokoo’s maximalist visual language, blending early-20th-century illustration with postmodern pastiche and psychedelic flair.
At the center stands an austere, monochrome figure—a man in a formal three-piece suit—rendered in crosshatched woodcut style, as if lifted from a 19th-century engraving. From his cupped hands, however, erupts a wildly surreal cascade of acrobatic women: contortionists in bright costumes, their limbs impossibly entwined, forming a spiraling chain of bodies. Their vivid colors—bright pink, red, peach—create a violent contrast against the somber figure holding them.
Behind the central collage, a dense radial burst of blue and green stripes emanates outward like a cosmic field, overlaid with planetary forms and cryptic text rings in gold foil. The explosive energy of the design is heightened by flaming pink outlines and a pulsating atmosphere of graphic dynamism—a signature Yokoo maneuver evoking spiritual revelation, circus surrealism, and media overload.
The composition is equal parts spectacle and satire, combining innocence, sexuality, and control in a deeply ambiguous tableau. It riffs on ideas of performance, spectacle, and perhaps even patriarchy, all while embracing Yokoo's signature irreverent humor.
Produced with rich offset lithographic technique, the print gleams with layered inks and foil, delivering depth and pop vibrancy. This visual texture reinforces Yokoo’s role as a bridge between Japanese print tradition and avant-garde graphic rebellion.
This poster was issued exclusively for Yokoo’s exhibition at Seiyu in 1989 and remains one of the most electrifying examples of his late-80s commercial-art crossover era. Near mint, unbacked, and preserved with razor-sharp clarity, it stands as a rare artifact from a pivotal Yokoo decade.
A must-have for collectors of Japanese pop art, surrealist graphic design, and the visual avant-garde of the Showa era.
