"I Confess", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1953, Ultra Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N154
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1953 for the first release of Alfred Hitchcock’s I Confess (私は告白する) — an ultra-rare B2 that almost never surfaces on the market.
Hitchcock’s morally charged thriller stars Montgomery Clift as a Catholic priest who hears a murderer’s confession and then becomes the prime suspect himself. Bound by the seal of the confessional, he cannot speak to clear his name, placing him in mortal jeopardy. Co-starring Anne Baxter, Karl Malden, and Brian Aherne, this underappreciated gem remains a favorite among Hitchcock devotees.
Poster design
An arresting hand-rendered composition: Clift stands rigid and contemplative, while Baxter collapses at his feet, clutching his coat—an image that crystallizes the film’s tension between desire, guilt, and duty. The monumental vertical Japanese title 「私は告白する」 dominates the left in bold black calligraphy; the English logotype I Confess sits beside the figures; a red tagline crowns the sheet, and the classic Warner Bros. shield marks the lower right. It’s one of the most striking Japanese designs for a Hitchcock title and exceptionally scarce in B2 format.
Rarity
First-release Japanese B2s for I Confess are extremely difficult to find—we seldom see an authentic example offered either in Japan or at major Western auctions. A blue-chip piece for Hitchcock and classic-cinema collectors.
