“The Grand Budapest Hotel” (グランド・ブダペスト・ホテル), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2014, B1 Size (72 × 103 cm)
This is an original Japanese B1 poster printed in 2014 for the first theatrical release of The Grand Budapest Hotel, written and directed by Wes Anderson and distributed in Japan by 20th Century Fox / Fox Searchlight. This large‑format B1 is a very scarce Japanese cinema size and the character‑montage design is unique to the Japanese campaign.
This poster is very hard to find in the large B1 size (double the standard size for a Japanese movie poster).
Film background
Set in the 1930s in the fictional alpine republic of Zubrowka, the film follows legendary concierge Monsieur Gustave H. and his newly hired lobby boy Zero Moustafa as they become embroiled in the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting, a bitter family feud and the rise of an encroaching fascist regime. Led by Ralph Fiennes and Tony Revolori, the ensemble cast includes F. Murray Abraham, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Jason Schwartzman, Léa Seydoux, Tilda Swinton, Tom Wilkinson and Owen Wilson.
Premiering in competition at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival, The Grand Budapest Hotel won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize and went on to become Wes Anderson’s most commercially successful film. It received nine nominations at the 87th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won four Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design and Best Original Score, along with numerous BAFTA, Golden Globe and other international awards.
Poster design
The Japanese B1 design turns Anderson’s celebrated ensemble into a whimsical “hotel personnel file”. Against a rich red background, sixteen portrait tags hang in a neat grid, each bearing a character headshot with both English and Japanese names—Ralph Fiennes’ M. Gustave, F. Murray Abraham’s Mr. Moustafa, Adrien Brody’s Dmitri, Willem Dafoe’s Jopling, Jeff Goldblum’s Kovacs, and the rest of the film’s rogues’ gallery. A dangling key and room‑card detail complete the “front desk” motif.
The lower half of the poster is devoted to the candy‑pink façade of the Grand Budapest itself, perched on its cliff with a stag silhouetted on the rock to the left and a waterfall to the right, perfectly capturing the film’s storybook central European setting. Above the portraits, a Japanese banner line proudly announces the film’s Silver Bear win at Berlin, while the bold katakana title 「グランド・ブダペスト・ホテル」 dominates the bottom in cream lettering. The web address GBH.JP, studio credits and the 映倫 (Eirin) mark line the footer, confirming this as an original Japanese theatrical piece. The reverse side is unprinted, with the image faintly visible through the thin stock typical of Japanese cinema posters (as shown in the additional photos).
