This is an original Japanese B1 poster printed for the Japanese theatrical release of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (ロード・オブ・ザ・リング/二つの塔), Peter Jackson’s epic second instalment in the trilogy. The film opened in Japan on 22 February 2003, and this example is a double-sided theatre light box display poster, produced for illuminated cinema use. That is exactly what makes this sheet especially desirable: double-sided Japanese B1 posters of this kind were intended for theatrical display and are much scarcer than standard single-sided issue posters.

Film background
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers continues the story after the breaking of the Fellowship, following Frodo and Sam toward Mordor, while Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli pursue Merry and Pippin across Middle-earth. Warner’s Japanese synopsis highlights the growing alliance between Saruman at Orthanc and Sauron in Mordor, as the story expands across Rohan, Fangorn, and the road to Mount Doom. Directed by Peter Jackson, the film stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, and others, and remains one of the defining fantasy films of its era.

This particular poster uses the well-known Japanese campaign design featuring Aragorn, Frodo, Gandalf, Arwen, Sam, Legolas, Saruman, and Gollum, set against the looming silhouette of Orthanc and a vast sepia-toned Middle-earth landscape. The typography at the bottom, the dramatic tower imagery, and the warm gold-brown palette give the sheet a strong, serious theatrical presence. Because it is printed on both sides for backlit display, it would originally have been intended to glow in a cinema light box, which adds another layer of authenticity and appeal for collectors of original exhibition material.

Poster design
The design is immediately recognisable as part of the original Japanese 2003 theatrical campaign, with the large ensemble portraiture balanced by the stark vertical form of the tower. The composition works especially well in the large B1 format, which gives the character montage real scale and makes it an impressive display piece once framed.

This poster is in excellent condition overall, especially considering its intended theatrical use. It presents very well, with strong colour, excellent display appeal, and only light handling wear consistent with age and cinema display. Please refer to the imagery (front and reverse), as this is the exact poster that is for sale.

It is over 20 years old.

It is not a reproduction or a reprint.
