Sale price $125.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1968 for the first-release campaign of The Snow Woman (怪談雪女郎 / Kaidan Yukijorō), also known internationally as Ghost Story of the Snow Witch. Directed by Tokuzō Tanaka and produced by Daiei, the film stars Shiho Fujimura, Akira Ishihama, Machiko Hasegawa, and features music by the legendary Akira Ifukube.

Film background
Released on 20 April 1968, The Snow Woman is a striking Japanese supernatural period film based on the famous Yuki-onna legend popularised by Lafcadio Hearn in Kwaidan. The story follows a young man who encounters a mysterious snow spirit and is spared on the condition that he never speaks of what he has seen. Years later, after marrying a woman named Yuki, he breaks his promise, leading to a tragic supernatural revelation. The film remains one of Daiei’s most atmospheric late-1960s kaidan productions.

Poster design
A beautiful and haunting Japanese B2 design, dominated by the enormous spectral eyes of Shiho Fujimura as the Snow Woman above a storm of blowing snow. At the centre, she appears in a white kimono, her long black hair and pale costume giving the poster its ghostly visual power. The large purple calligraphic title 怪談雪女郎 runs vertically down the right side, creating a strong contrast against the icy grey-blue background.

The red vertical tagline on the left reads in essence: “When the woman’s shadow beyond the blizzard beckons with hands whiter than snow, and embraces a man with skin colder than ice…” This poetic copy gives the poster an especially strong period horror atmosphere. The lower section carries the Daiei production credits and cast names in blue, grounding the image in its original theatrical release context.

Rarity and significance
Original Japanese theatrical posters for 1960s kaidan cinema are increasingly difficult to find, especially examples with such strong supernatural imagery. This B2 is particularly desirable for its elegant composition, direct focus on the Snow Woman figure, and its connection to Daiei’s refined tradition of post-war ghost-story filmmaking.
