“The Warriors” (ウォリアーズ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1979, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA831
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1979 for the first release of The Warriors (ウォリアーズ), Walter Hill’s cult New York gang odyssey—one of the defining midnight movies of the late 1970s.
Film background
Based on Sol Yurick’s novel (itself loosely inspired by Xenophon’s Anabasis), The Warriors follows a Coney Island gang framed for a murder at a city-wide truce. With every crew in New York hunting them, the Warriors have to fight (and run) their way across the night—subway by subway—back to their own turf. The film’s hard-edged street style, synth-driven atmosphere, and mythic “urban western” structure have made it a lasting influence on cinema, music, fashion, and games.
Poster design
The Japanese first-release B2 uses the film’s most iconic image: the Warriors striding through wet asphalt at dawn, reflections pooling beneath them—an instantly recognisable piece of late-’70s New York imagery. The bold brush-style title 「ウォリアーズ」 punches in red across the lower section, perfectly matching the film’s raw energy.
Top copy reads: 「俺たちが最高!!」 (“We’re the best!!”) with additional teaser text: 「若い『夜の戦士たち』10万人!真夜中のニューヨークに、各『組』9名づつが集った!」—roughly, “100,000 young ‘night warriors’… In midnight New York, nine members from each gang assembled!”
