"Black Belt Jones (黒帯ドラゴン)", Original Japanese Movie Poster 1974, First Release, B3 Size (36 × 51 cm) N177
This is an original Japanese B3 poster printed in 1974 for the first theatrical release of Black Belt Jones (黒帯ドラゴン), distributed by Warner Bros. in Japan. Japanese B3 formats are scarce and are highly collectible, particularly for martial arts and blaxploitation crossover films of the 1970s.
Film background
Directed by Robert Clouse — best known for Enter the Dragon (1973) — Black Belt Jones stars martial arts legend Jim Kelly in his breakout leading role following his iconic turn alongside Bruce Lee. The film follows Kelly as “Black Belt” Jones, a martial artist who takes on the mafia after they attempt to muscle in on a local karate dojo. Combining kung fu spectacle, blaxploitation style, and funky 1970s flair, the movie became a cult classic and cemented Kelly’s place as a pioneering Black martial arts star in Hollywood cinema.
Poster design
The Japanese B3 poster features a bold and kinetic collage: Jim Kelly in a dynamic fighting stance dominates the composition, with Gloria Hendry (co-star and Bond girl from Live and Let Die) striking a pose beside him. Behind them, explosive street battles and police confrontations unfold, emphasizing the film’s gritty action and urban energy. The bold Japanese title “黒帯ドラゴン” and angled English logo Black Belt Jones slash across the design in red, enhancing its sense of motion and impact. Compact yet striking, this B3 is a vivid example of 1970s martial arts poster art.
