“Thunderbolt and Lightfoot” (サンダーボルト / Thunderbolt and Lightfoot), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1974, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA63
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1974 for the first Japanese release of Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, the stylish American crime caper directed by Michael Cimino and starring Clint Eastwood, Jeff Bridges, George Kennedy, and Geoffrey Lewis. A superb piece of 1970s Japanese action paper, it combines cool star imagery, high-speed destruction, and oversized typography in exactly the way collectors hope for from Eastwood posters of this period.
Film background
Released in 1974, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot pairs Clint Eastwood as a veteran thief with Jeff Bridges as his reckless young partner in a sharply observed road-heist story that mixes humour, melancholy, violence, and swagger. Directed by Michael Cimino in his feature debut, the film stands out among 1970s American crime movies for its unusual mix of buddy-movie looseness and sudden brutality. It also earned Bridges an Academy Award nomination and remains one of the most distinctive films in Eastwood’s 1970s run.
Poster design
This Japanese poster is bold and highly displayable. The composition is dominated by a huge close-up of Clint Eastwood in sunglasses, cigar in mouth, giving the sheet immediate star power and attitude. Cutting diagonally across the image is a massive gun barrel / cannon-like form, while the surrounding collage adds bursts of action: car crashes, armed confrontation, pursuit, and smaller figure studies that hint at the film’s caper structure. The giant red Japanese title サンダーボルト across the bottom gives the poster tremendous wall presence. It is exactly the sort of loud, stylish, kinetic Japanese design that makes vintage Eastwood paper so collectible.
