“TILLIE’S PUNCTURED ROMANCE” (チャップリンの百万長者), Original Japanese Release Poster 1954, Size (26 × 36 cm) P270
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1954 for the Japanese release of Tillie’s Punctured Romance, marketed locally as チャップリンの百万長者 (“Chaplin’s Millionaire”). A wonderfully characterful mid-century Japanese illustration poster for an early silent-era Chaplin feature, it is the kind of paper that very rarely survives in strong, displayable condition.
Unlike the more commonly encountered post-war Japanese posters for Chaplin’s later classics, this title sits firmly in the deeper catalogue of early silent comedy, making an authentic 1950s Japanese release example especially desirable for collectors who want something far beyond the usual City Lights, Modern Times, or The Great Dictator territory.
Film background
Originally released in 1914, Tillie’s Punctured Romance is one of the key early feature-length comedies of the Keystone era, pairing Charles Chaplin with Marie Dressler and Mabel Normand in a broad, anarchic story of romance, deception, and sudden wealth. It remains historically important as an early milestone in feature-length screen comedy and captures Chaplin at a fascinating stage in his career—still closely tied to the rough, energetic Keystone style, but already unmistakable as a magnetic screen presence.
This Japanese release poster carries a particularly interesting local detail: it credits a Japanese 解説 (live commentary / narration) by 山野一郎, a reminder that silent films in Japan were often experienced with an added benshi-style performance layer. That makes this poster not just an advertisement for the film, but also a document of how Chaplin was presented to Japanese audiences in the post-war period.
Poster design
This is pure Japanese hand-painted poster craft, designed for maximum impact. A huge, grinning Chaplin portrait dominates the composition—eyes wide, expression manic, rendered in warm creams, browns, and pinks with bold painterly brushwork. Across the top, the cast names appear in striking coloured bands, while the English title TILLIE’S Punctured Romance anchors the centre like a prestige billing.
The Japanese title 「チャップリンの百万長者」 explodes across the lower half in oversized green lettering with blue shadowing, with チャップリンの picked out in vivid red—classic mid-century Japanese typographic showmanship. Supporting illustrated vignettes of Chaplin and the principal characters add comic narrative flavour without overcrowding the sheet. Distributor and credit marks along the bottom margin complete a wonderfully period-specific piece of cinema ephemera.
Condition
Very Good / Excellent. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale. The poster was folded and later stored flat, with fold and handling creases visible under light, but nothing that overwhelms the artwork. Colours remain bold and attractive, and the illustration retains excellent visual punch.
