This is an original Japanese poster from the first release of "Ugetsu" (雨月物語, Ugetsu Monogatari) in 1953.
This poster is ultra rare and was printed for the initial Japanese release of Kenji Mizoguchi’s internationally acclaimed masterpiece. Mizoguchi, known for his graceful long takes and socially conscious narratives, is regarded as one of the most important and influential directors in the history of world cinema.
"Ugetsu" is a haunting and poetic blend of historical drama and supernatural folklore, based on the 18th-century stories by Ueda Akinari. Set during the civil wars of 16th-century Japan, the film explores the tragic consequences of ambition and illusion through the parallel stories of two men who abandon their families in search of fame and fortune — only to be met with ghostly seduction and irreversible loss.
This original B4-format speed poster / press-sheet is a country-of-origin promotional item used during the film’s initial theatrical run. The artwork captures the film’s ethereal atmosphere and features its lead characters in beautifully composed full-color imagery. The reverse side includes illustrated production notes, synopsis, cast lists, and scene sketches typical of press-sheets from the era.
The film won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1953, solidifying its place as one of Japan’s most celebrated cinematic exports and helping introduce Japanese cinema to a global audience.
