“Wattstax” (ワッツタックス), Original Japanese B2 Poster 1973, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O623
This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued in Japan for Wattstax—the landmark Stax Records concert documentary released theatrically in 1973, filmed at the 1972 Watts Summer Festival. Part concert film, part cultural time-capsule, it captures a once‑in‑a‑generation roster (Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Rufus & Carla Thomas, Albert King, The Bar‑Kays and more) with the scale of a major event and the immediacy of street‑level reportage.
Poster design
A quintessential early‑70s piece of pop graphic design: the monumental, architectural WATTSTAX letterforms dominate the sheet, while a rainbow aura frames the iconic image of Isaac Hayes performing—his sunglasses catching a starburst flare at the centre. The lower band grounds the spectacle with a packed crowd scene, and the Japanese copy at the bottom hypes the experience in pure showman language: “Midsummer sun! 100,000 spectators! Six hours of soul and emotion!”
