“Wild Strawberries” / 「野いちご」, Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1970, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) F274

Sale price $185.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1970 for the Japanese re-release of Wild Strawberries (Smultronstället / 「野いちご」), Ingmar Bergman’s landmark 1957 Swedish masterpiece.

This poster was produced for the film’s later Japanese art-house circulation, following its earlier introduction to Japanese audiences, and reflects the distinctive visual culture of Japan’s serious repertory and cinephile exhibition scene.

Film background

Wild Strawberries is one of Ingmar Bergman’s most celebrated films and one of the essential works of post-war world cinema.

The story follows Professor Isak Borg, an elderly physician and academic who travels by car to receive an honorary degree. Accompanied by his daughter-in-law, he passes through landscapes, dreams, memories, and chance encounters that compel him to confront the emotional failures, regrets, lost loves, and spiritual isolation of his life.

Directed and written by Ingmar Bergman, the film stars:

  • Victor Sjöström as Isak Borg
  • Ingrid Thulin
  • Bibi Andersson

The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and remains one of Bergman’s most enduring and influential works, admired for its dream imagery, emotional intelligence, and profound meditation on memory, time, aging, and mortality.

Poster design

This Japanese poster uses a striking monochrome green-toned design, giving it a distinctly art-house and atmospheric presence.

The upper half layers two principal images: a large, melancholic portrait of Bibi Andersson looking downward, and a contemplative image of Victor Sjöström as Professor Borg. The result is dreamlike and reflective, visually echoing the film’s movement between present reality and remembered experience.

Across the centre runs a block of Japanese text summarising the film’s themes, followed by the credit:

「名匠イングマール・ベルイマン監督」
“Directed by the master Ingmar Bergman”

The original Swedish title SMULTRON STÄLLET appears in Roman letters beneath the awards line.

Dominating the middle of the poster is the Japanese title:

「野いちご」

rendered in a bold, hand-brushed white style that stands out dramatically against the deep green background.

At the bottom, a solitary woman in a pale dress moves through a grassy field, creating a lyrical final image suggestive of memory, youth, longing, and the passage of time.

The overall design is elegant, restrained, and highly evocative—very much in keeping with the serious visual language of Japanese repertory and ATG-era exhibition materials.
