This is an original Japanese B0 poster (approx. 103 x 145 cm), printed in 2019 for the "Lineage of Eccentrics" (奇想の系譜) exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The striking artwork was created by legendary Japanese artist Tadanori Yokoo, known for his vibrant, surrealist visual language and deep ties to pop and counterculture.
Commissioned specially for the show by Yuji Yamashita, the art historian and curator who oversaw the exhibition, this piece was conceived as the official visual for the blockbuster event. The exhibition celebrated the wildly imaginative world of Edo-period painters — particularly Soga Shōhaku, a favorite of Yokoo’s — and drew connections between historical eccentricity and contemporary expression.
Titled "The Miraculous World of Edo Painting / Lineage of Eccentrics", the image explodes with Yokoo’s trademark chaos: mythical beasts, theatrical figures, modern motifs, and irreverent juxtapositions that bridge centuries of Japanese artistic tradition.
