This is an original Japanese B1 theatrical poster printed for the first Japanese release of Blue Velvet (ブルーベルベット). The large B1 format (approx. 71 × 103 cm) is a premium Japanese poster size and is encountered far less often than the standard B2, making this a standout collector’s piece—especially for major David Lynch titles.
Blue Velvet is a 1986 American neo-noir mystery thriller written and directed by David Lynch, starring Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper, and Laura Dern, with music by Angelo Badalamenti. The story follows a college student who returns to his hometown, discovers a severed human ear, and is pulled into a terrifying criminal underworld connected to a troubled nightclub singer—revealing the rot beneath small-town Americana. The film earned Lynch an Academy Award nomination for Best Director and went on to become one of his most celebrated and influential works.
This Japanese B1 design is an elegant, moody piece that perfectly matches the film’s seductive dread: the title “Blue Velvet” appears in sweeping script across a deep blue field, while the central image captures the film’s iconic intimate, unsettling atmosphere. Beneath the title, the Japanese tagline reads:
「ブリリアントな悪夢 まさにセンセーション……」
(“A brilliant nightmare—truly a sensation…”)
The lower text block highlights critical acclaim/awards, and the credits identify it as 「デビッド・リンチ監督作品」 (“A film by David Lynch”). The film’s first Japanese theatrical release is documented as May 2, 1987, aligning with this original-era Japanese campaign poster.
