“Clash of the Titans” (タイタンの戦い), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1981, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q28
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1981 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Clash of the Titans (タイタンの戦い), the celebrated mythological fantasy directed by Desmond Davis. Produced by Charles H. Schneer and Ray Harryhausen, the film is especially prized as the final feature film to showcase Harryhausen’s stop-motion effects work, and original Japanese release posters for it are highly desirable to collectors of fantasy and classic special-effects cinema.
Film background
Released in Japan on 19 December 1981, Clash of the Titans is based on the Greek myth of Perseus and was written by Beverley Cross. The film stars Harry Hamlin as Perseus, alongside Judi Bowker, Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Claire Bloom, Ursula Andress, Burgess Meredith, and others. With its legendary gallery of creatures, gods, monsters, and heroic trials, it remains one of the defining fantasy adventure films of its period and one of the great late works associated with Harryhausen’s name.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly recognisable original Japanese release design. The composition places Perseus and Andromeda prominently at centre, framed by a deep blue celestial sky filled with constellations and mythic symbolism. Pegasus soars across the upper left, while the lower half erupts into a dramatic montage of sea monsters, combat, Medusa, Bubo, and other fantasy elements from the film. The enormous Japanese title in gold gives the sheet real impact, balancing the romantic and mythological atmosphere above with the vivid action below. It is an exceptionally attractive theatrical poster for one of the most beloved fantasy films of the early 1980s.
