“Devilman” (デビルマン), Original Japanese Promotional Poster 1972, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q105
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster printed in 1979 for Devilman (デビルマン), the landmark Toei Animation television anime based on the manga by Go Nagai. The series was developed during the explosive early-1970s boom in darker, more dramatic Japanese animation, and remains one of the defining titles of the era.
Film / series background
First broadcast in 1972, Devilman is one of the most important and enduring works associated with Go Nagai, whose creation helped redefine the possibilities of manga and anime by introducing a much darker blend of horror, action, tragedy, and supernatural conflict. The story follows Akira Fudō, a young man who becomes fused with a demon and transforms into Devilman, retaining his human heart while gaining immense demonic power. Standing between humanity and destruction, he is forced into a violent struggle against the demon world.
The television anime was produced by Toei Animation and is today regarded as one of the seminal titles of early 1970s Japanese popular culture. Even decades later, Devilman remains enormously influential, with the imagery of Akira, Devilman, and the surrounding cast continuing to resonate with collectors of vintage anime material.
Poster design
This is a superb and visually striking design. At centre stage is Devilman himself, rendered in a bold heroic pose, his muscular green body dominating the composition. Behind him at left appears Akira Fudō, his human alter ego, while at right is Miki Makimura, the series’ central female lead. In the lower right corner is the demon warrior Sirene, shown perched on a rock in a smaller inset scene.
The composition is classic early-1970s anime graphic design: bold primary contrasts, strong outline work, and a clean, uncluttered emphasis on character iconography. The fiery red-and-yellow background behind the upper figures shifts into a deep blue night sky below, creating a powerful contrast and giving the sheet an almost mythic, supernatural atmosphere. It is an image that immediately captures the essential appeal of Devilman: human drama, demonic power, and pure vintage anime intensity.
