“Dune” (砂の惑星), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) J30
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1984 for the first Japanese release of Dune, directed by David Lynch and starring Kyle MacLachlan, Francesca Annis, Jürgen Prochnow, Sean Young, Sting, Max von Sydow, and Patrick Stewart. Adapted from Frank Herbert’s landmark science-fiction novel, the film remains one of the most visually ambitious and idiosyncratic studio epics of the 1980s.
Film background
Released in 1984, Dune was conceived as a vast interstellar saga of dynastic conflict, prophecy, ecology, and empire. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, it follows Paul Atreides as he is drawn into a struggle over power, destiny, and the precious spice that sustains the known universe. Although its initial reception was divided, the film has long since become a major cult classic, admired for its extraordinary production design, dense world-building, and singular fusion of space opera with mystical and political themes.
For collectors, Dune occupies a particularly appealing place in 1980s cinema: a large-scale science-fiction work that feels at once extravagant, strange, and unmistakably personal.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly dramatic Japanese design. The composition is built around a large romantic central pairing of Paul Atreides and Chani, set before monumental spacecraft and the desert world of Arrakis, while a montage of supporting characters, futuristic architecture, battle imagery, and strange creatures radiates around them. The result is rich, dense, and unapologetically epic — exactly the sort of visual treatment that suits the film’s scale.
The huge Japanese title 砂の惑星 at the bottom has tremendous impact, while the upper copy emphasises the film’s status as a major science-fiction spectacle. What makes this poster especially appealing is the way it balances intimacy and grandeur: it is at once a romance, a war film, and a cosmic fantasy. As a display piece, it is bold, colourful, and immediately recognisable.
