“Heaven and Earth” (天と地と), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1990, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q64
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1990 for the first theatrical release of Heaven and Earth (天と地と), the large-scale Sengoku epic directed by Haruki Kadokawa and based on the historical novel by Kaionji Chogorō. The film was produced in Japan in 1990, released theatrically on 23 June 1990, distributed by Toei, and centres on the rivalry between Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen.
Film background
Set against the turmoil of the Warring States period, Heaven and Earth dramatizes the rise of Uesugi Kenshin and his legendary conflict with Takeda Shingen, culminating in the battles of Kawanakajima. Japanese film sources credit Haruki Kadokawa as director and co-writer, with Takaaki Enoki as Kenshin, Masahiko Tsugawa as Shingen, Atsuko Asano, Naomi Zaizen, and Tsunehiko Watase among the principal cast. Contemporary references also note the film’s unusually large scale, including major location shooting and a budget reported at over 2 billion yen, making it one of the most ambitious Japanese historical productions of its time.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly dramatic original release design. The poster is dominated by a fierce close-up of an armoured warrior with raised sword, set against a blazing red battlefield filled with banners and figures in motion. The huge white brushstroke title crashes across the lower centre, while the gold calligraphic copy at upper left reinforces the epic, martial tone. It is an exceptionally strong country-of-origin design: bold, aggressive, and unmistakably rooted in the grand visual language of late-1980s and early-1990s Japanese historical cinema.
