“Mobile Suit Gundam” (機動戦士ガンダム), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1980, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA425
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in the early 1980s for the theatrical compilation film Mobile Suit Gundam (機動戦士ガンダム), which edited the landmark 1979 TV series for cinema release.
Film background
Directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, Mobile Suit Gundam revolutionised the mecha genre by introducing the “real robot” concept — grounded military science‑fiction, political intrigue and complex characters rather than simple good‑vs‑evil super‑robots. Set during the One Year War between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, the film follows teenage engineer Amuro Ray as he becomes the reluctant pilot of the RX‑78‑2 Gundam aboard the White Base, discovering his Newtype abilities while struggling with the horrors of war. The compilation movies helped cement Gundam as a cultural phenomenon and opened the franchise to cinema audiences.
Poster design
This B2 features a powerful painted composition, widely attributed to character designer/illustrator Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (“YAS”). Amuro stands alone on a rocky peak, helmet in hand, illuminated like a figure from a heroic myth. Behind him looms the colossal head of the RX‑78‑2 Gundam, emerging from a deep blue void of space dotted with stars. The warm gradation of the sky and the cool blues of the Gundam create a strong contrast that emphasises both the loneliness of the young pilot and the awe‑inspiring scale of the mobile suit. The bold red Japanese logo at the bottom anchors the design and gives it classic early‑80s anime energy.
Rarity and condition
Early theatrical posters for the original Mobile Suit Gundam films are highly prized by anime and mecha collectors. Many surviving examples saw heavy cinema use and exhibit significant wear, so attractive, unrestored pieces are increasingly difficult to source.
This particular poster is in excellent condition for its age. Colours remain vivid and the artwork presents beautifully. There is some light handling wear, minor creasing and age‑related spotting around the borders, consistent with original display, but nothing that detracts from overall impact. Please examine the photos carefully, as they show the exact poster being offered.
It is over 45 years old.
It is not a reproduction or a reprint.
