“Mobile Suit Gundam II / ‘On the Battlefield’” (機動戦士ガンダムII 戦場で), Original Japanese Promotional / Soundtrack Poster c. 1981, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q84

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster from the early Gundam movie era, issued in connection with the King Records LP / cassette release 機動戦士ガンダム 戦場で, catalogued as SKD(H)-2015 / A(H)-321. The poster itself bears the printed Gundam II designation at lower left, linking it directly to the era of Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow, which opened in Japan on 11 July 1981. It is therefore best understood not as the standard theatrical one-sheet for the film, but as a rarer soundtrack / promotional issue from the second-film period.

Franchise background

The original Mobile Suit Gundam theatrical trilogy began with the first film in March 1981, followed by Soldiers of Sorrow in July 1981, and Encounters in Space in 1982. That run helped transform Gundam from a respected television series into a full cultural phenomenon in Japan. Posters and promotional material from this first wave are especially desirable because they belong to the period when the franchise’s heroic, tragic, and increasingly mythic visual language was first being fixed in the public imagination.

Poster design

This is one of the most lyrical and emotionally charged early Gundam designs. Rather than emphasising mechanical battle or explosive action, the composition presents a youthful Amuro Ray in the foreground, with an ethereal female figure rising behind him in a soft painterly haze, creating a mood of memory, loss, and awakening. The printed “YAS.” signature in the image itself ties the sheet closely to the visual world of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, and the muted palette of warm browns, pale whites, and soft blues gives the poster an unusually elegant and melancholic atmosphere.

That restraint is exactly what makes it so compelling. It feels less like ordinary merchandising and more like a character study — one of the most refined and poetic surviving poster images from the original Gundam era.
