“Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space”, Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1982, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) H261

Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1982 for the first release of Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space (機動戦士ガンダムIII めぐりあい宇宙編), the third and final film in the original Mobile Suit Gundam theatrical trilogy. Directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino and based on the landmark Sunrise television series, the film features key voice performances by Toru Furuya, Shuichi Ikeda, Fuyumi Shiraishi, and Hirotaka Suzuoki.

Film background

Released in 1982, Encounters in Space brings the original Gundam saga to its dramatic conclusion, covering the closing stages of the One Year War and the final confrontations involving Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, and the White Base crew. More than a simple compilation, the film helped crystallise the mythic status of early Gundam, refining and elevating the television material for the cinema and cementing the franchise’s place at the centre of modern Japanese anime history.

For collectors, this title is one of the most important early Gundam theatrical releases. It belongs to the moment when Gundam moved from successful television property to full cultural phenomenon, and original country-of-origin posters from this first era are increasingly scarce in strong condition.

Poster design

This is a superb and iconic original release design. The composition is dominated by the RX-78-2 Gundam in a triumphant, upward-thrusting pose against a blazing red-orange explosion, with wreckage and battle debris erupting behind it. The image evokes the famous “Last Shooting!” moment, explicitly referenced by the text at upper left, and gives the poster exceptional energy and wall presence.

The contrast between the intense fiery background and the white, blue, and red mechanical form of the Gundam creates tremendous impact, while the lower title treatment in bold gold and orange anchors the design with unmistakable early-1980s anime style. It is exactly the kind of poster collectors want from original Gundam material: dramatic, heroic, and instantly recognisable.
