“Mobile Suit Gundam / Char Aznable & Zeong” (機動戦士ガンダム), Original Japanese Promotional Poster c. 1983, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q82
This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster from the early Gundam boom, featuring Char Aznable alongside the Zeong. It is not the standard theatrical B2 poster for the first 1981 movie. The lower-right margin identifies “TOTAL-SHOP OF ANIMATION & COMICS ANIMATE,” which places it within Animate’s early retail promotion world; since Animate’s first Ikebukuro store opened in March 1983, this poster is most accurately catalogued as an early-1980s promotional issue, c. 1983.
Franchise background
The original Mobile Suit Gundam theatrical trilogy began with Mobile Suit Gundam I in March 1981, followed by Soldiers of Sorrow in July 1981, and Encounters in Space in 1982. That run helped turn Gundam from an admired television series into a full-scale cultural phenomenon in Japan. Posters from this first wave are especially desirable because they belong to the period when the franchise’s visual language — heroic, tragic, and increasingly mythic — was first being fixed in the public imagination.
Poster design
This is a striking and highly unusual design, and one of the most visually distinctive early Gundam posters. Rather than focusing on the RX-78-2 Gundam or a crowded battle scene, the composition gives pride of place to Char Aznable, shown unmasked in his red uniform, standing before the immense blue mass of the Zeong. Running vertically along the left edge is the famous English slogan: “MAN MAY TRANSCEND EVEN TIME IN THE YEARS AHEAD.” That single line gives the poster an unusually philosophical and futuristic atmosphere, while the contrast between Char’s red uniform and the cold monumental blue of the Zeong creates tremendous wall presence.
It is precisely this combination — Char, Zeong, and the severe English slogan treatment — that makes the sheet so collectible. It feels less like ordinary film advertising and more like an early statement of Gundam’s larger mythos.
Condition
Very Good. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale. The poster displays strongly overall, with rich colour and excellent visual impact. There is light age-related handling, surface wear in places, and a small area of paper loss at lower right hand corner from previous display, along with minor edge wear and light signs of old use visible chiefly near the borders and on the reverse. This has been taken into account in the pricing. Despite that, the poster still presents very well from the front.
