“My Neighbor Totoro” (となりのトトロ), Original Japanese Home Video Release Promotional Poster 1988, Very Rare, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) O657

Sale price $500.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued in Japan as a home video / disc release promotional for My Neighbor Totoro (となりのトトロ), Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved Studio Ghibli masterpiece (originally released theatrically in 1988). This specific campaign variant is clearly date-coded on the design for the first major home video push: “9.5 ビデオ発売” (Video release: 5 September 1988) and “9.25 ディスク発売” (Disc release: 25 September 1988).

This is the first time we have had this poster in stock.

Poster design
One of the most iconic images in all of Japanese animation marketing: Mei standing small and brave under a bright red umbrella as rain falls in long vertical lines, while Totoro looms beside her—round, immense, and utterly calm—wearing a simple green leaf on his head like nature’s own umbrella. The background is a deep, wooded darkness with a faintly visible torii gate and forest detail, giving the scene a hushed, nocturnal atmosphere that feels both magical and real. The vertical hot-pink title 「となりのトトロ」 cuts down the left side with strong graphic impact, while the top headline reads 「忘れものは、届きましたか。」 (“Have your lost things been delivered?”)—the famous release-era line associated with the film’s original campaign.

Overall, it’s a masterclass in restraint: minimal characters, maximum mood—making this one of the most displayable Totoro designs ever produced.
