“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, Very Rare Promotional Edition, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q36

Sale price $600.00

This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1984 for the promotion of the first theatrical release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Topcraft, and scored by Joe Hisaishi. Issued prior to the founding of Studio Ghibli in 1985, Nausicaä is the film that catalyzed the studio’s creation and is now regarded as an essential part of its canon.

Unlike the standard theatrical B2s, this very rare promotional variant was produced in extremely limited numbers for specialty circulation. These pieces rarely surface on the market today and are highly coveted by collectors of anime history and Japanese design.

Why this example is extraordinary (rarity & market)

Early country-of-origin promotional issue tied to the film’s landmark 1984 release.

Dramatically rarer than the standard B2s, with this artwork variant seldom encountered on the market.

Historically important: this film marked the start of Miyazaki and Hisaishi’s legendary partnership and directly led to the founding of Studio Ghibli.

Poster design

A beautiful and finely observed composition, this design presents Nausicaä high among the rigging and sail structure of a wind-powered craft, accompanied by an older figure in flight gear below. Rendered in a delicate watercolour-and-line style, the image has a warm, adventurous tone quite different from the more dramatic standard theatrical posters. The intricate mechanical details of the craft, the angled timber supports, and the soft sky beyond give the scene a sense of movement, invention, and open-air freedom.

At lower left, the understated NAUSICAA Of The Valley of Wind logotype and copyright line are integrated with exceptional restraint, allowing the illustration to dominate. The result is an unusually elegant promotional design that feels almost like a painted concept image rather than a conventional commercial poster—quietly sophisticated, highly displayable, and unmistakably tied to the artistic world of Miyazaki.

Condition

Excellent (close to near mint). Colours are rich and attractive, the paper lies flat, and the poster presents beautifully overall. Please review the photos (front and back); they show the exact poster for sale.
