“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, Very Rare Promotional Edition, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q89

Sale price $345.00

This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1984 for the promotion of the first theatrical release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Topcraft, and scored by Joe Hisaishi. Issued prior to the founding of Studio Ghibli in 1985, Nausicaä is the film that catalyzed the studio’s creation and is now regarded as an essential part of its canon.

Unlike the standard theatrical B2s, this very rare promotional variant was produced in extremely limited numbers for specialty circulation. These pieces rarely surface on the market today and are highly coveted by collectors of anime history and Japanese design.

Why this example is extraordinary (rarity & market)

Early country-of-origin promotional issue tied to the film’s landmark 1984 release.

Dramatically rarer than the standard B2s, with this artwork variant seldom encountered on the market.

Historically important: this film marked the start of Miyazaki and Hisaishi’s legendary partnership and directly led to the founding of Studio Ghibli.

Poster design

A breathtaking and painterly composition: rendered in a delicate watercolour-and-pencil style, this design shows Nausicaä within the Toxic Jungle beside strange insect life and a vast organic shell-like form, capturing the film’s atmosphere of wonder, fragility, and ecological mystery. The cool blue-grey palette and open, airy composition give the piece an unusually quiet and lyrical feeling, while the elegant NAUSICAA in the Valley of Wind logotype at lower right and the minimalist copyright line at lower left anchor the image with striking restraint.

The absence of heavy copy lines or commercial clutter allows the artwork to speak for itself—a gallery-worthy piece that feels closer to an animation study or concept illustration than a standard theatrical poster, and one that reflects the artistry of Miyazaki at the dawn of his cinematic career.

Condition

Very Good to Excellent for its age. Colours remain soft and attractive, the paper lies flat, and the poster presents beautifully overall. Please review the photos (front and back); they show the exact poster for sale. Please see additional imagery provided.
