“Princess from the Moon” (竹取物語), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1987, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA1101

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1987 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Princess from the Moon (竹取物語), directed by Kon Ichikawa (市川崑).

Released as Toho’s 55th Anniversary film, it was produced by Toho and Fuji Television and distributed in Japan by Toho (Colour / Panavision).

Film background
Based on the 10th-century folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, this lavish adaptation adds a bold modern twist: Princess Kaguya’s true origin is extraterrestrial—with the story escalating into spectacular fantasy-SF set-pieces (including kaijū-scale action and the unforgettable celestial “return” imagery).

The film was selected as an opening special screening title at the 2nd Tokyo International Film Festival, making it a particularly notable “event” release from the late Shōwa era.

Poster design
One of the most beautiful Japanese science-fantasy poster designs of the 1980s: a colossal, radiant space station floods the starfield with a white beam, aimed toward the tiny, drifting figure of Kaguya-hime at lower right. The vertical tagline 「かぐや姫は宇宙からやって来た」 (“Princess Kaguya came from space”) sells the film’s distinctive sci-fi premise at a glance, while the bold yellow title 竹取物語 anchors the sheet with classic Toho-era authority. A genuinely frame-worthy B2—clean, cosmic, and instantly displayable.
