“The Getaway” (ゲッタウェイ), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1973 (for the 1972 film), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q37
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed for the first Japanese theatrical release of The Getaway (ゲッタウェイ), Sam Peckinpah’s hard-edged crime thriller starring Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw. Although the film is a 1972 American production, it opened theatrically in Japan on 16 March 1973, with distribution by Towa.
Film background
Based on Jim Thompson’s novel and adapted for the screen by Walter Hill, The Getaway follows Doc McCoy, a career criminal who is released from prison only to become entangled in a bank robbery, betrayal, and a violent flight across the American Southwest. The film was directed by Sam Peckinpah, photographed by Lucien Ballard, scored by Quincy Jones, and stars Steve McQueen, Ali MacGraw, Ben Johnson, Al Lettieri, Sally Struthers, Bo Hopkins, and Slim Pickens. It remains one of the most stylish and commercially successful crime films associated with Peckinpah’s name.
Poster design
This is a striking and highly graphic original Japanese release design. The upper half is dominated by a huge monochrome portrait of McQueen, while the title crashes across the middle in massive silver lettering, interrupted by images of gunfire, pursuit, and the central romantic pairing. The bold red Japanese title adds explosive visual energy, and the large-scale close-up imagery gives the poster a distinctly tougher, more modern feel than many contemporary American campaign materials. It is an exceptionally strong country-of-origin design for one of McQueen’s defining 1970s films.
