“The Goofy Sports Story” (スポーツ虎の巻), Original Japanese B2 Poster 1956, Very Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA1112
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1956 for Walt Disney’s The Goofy Sports Story (スポーツ虎の巻 / Supōtsu Tora no Maki), a Disney animated sports compilation released in Japan during the mid-1950s. This is a very rare early Japanese Disney poster, dating from a period when imported animated features and short-subject compilations were promoted with highly distinctive local artwork and typography.
Film background
The Goofy Sports Story presents Goofy in a series of comic sporting situations, drawing on Disney’s celebrated “How to…” cartoon tradition. The Japanese title スポーツ虎の巻 can be understood as “The Master Guide to Sports” or “The Sports Manual,” playing on the idea of a humorous instruction guide.
The poster text lists several featured sports themes, including Olympic history, track and field, skiing, baseball, and football. The timing is particularly interesting, as the poster was issued in 1956, the year of the Melbourne Olympic Games, giving the release an immediate sporting context for Japanese audiences.
Poster design
A charming and highly colourful Showa-era Disney design. The central upper image shows Goofy dressed as an ancient Olympic athlete, wearing a laurel wreath and carrying a flaming torch through classical ruins. The surrounding architecture and columns give the poster a playful pseudo-Greek setting, tying the design directly to the Olympic theme.
Across the middle, the poster announces ウォルト・ディズニーの色彩漫画映画 — “Walt Disney’s colour cartoon film.” The large red Japanese title スポーツ虎の巻 dominates the lower section in bold hand-drawn lettering, while the bottom vignettes show Goofy failing spectacularly at different sports, including pole vaulting, skiing, baseball, and football.
At lower right, the English title Walt Disney Presents The Goofy Sports Story appears alongside the copyright line © MCMLVI Walt Disney Productions, confirming its original 1956 issue.
Rarity and significance
Original Japanese Disney posters from the 1950s are exceptionally difficult to find, particularly in B2 format. These posters were made for theatrical promotion and were not generally preserved as collectibles at the time. Many were displayed, folded, damaged, or discarded after use.
This example is especially appealing because it combines early Japanese Disney distribution, Olympic-era sports imagery, and a full-colour Goofy design from the golden period of Disney theatrical poster collecting. It is a strong piece for collectors of vintage Disney, Japanese animation ephemera, Olympic-related design, and 1950s cinema posters.
Condition
Very Good. The poster presents very well overall with strong colour and excellent graphic impact. Visible fold lines, handling creases, edge wear, small tears, and minor paper wear are present, including along the top-right and lower-left areas, as shown in the detail photos.
