“Total Recall” (トータル・リコール), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1990, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) T253
This is an original Japanese B2 poster produced for the 1990 first theatrical release of Total Recall, directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Released in Japan on 1 December 1990, the film combines spectacular science-fiction action with a twisting mystery about memory, identity, and the reliability of reality.
Film background
Inspired by Philip K. Dick’s short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, Total Recall follows construction worker Douglas Quaid, whose recurring dreams of Mars lead him to Rekall, a company selling artificial holiday memories. When the procedure goes wrong, Quaid finds himself pursued by armed strangers and questioning everything he thought he knew about his life.
Featuring Sharon Stone, Rachel Ticotin, Michael Ironside, and Ronny Cox, the film brings together Verhoeven’s dark humour, elaborate practical effects, and Schwarzenegger’s commanding screen presence.
Poster design
This striking composition places the film’s psychological mystery at its centre. Against a pale background, a monumental portrait of Schwarzenegger fills the lower portion of the sheet, its dark silhouette incorporating stars, planetary imagery, and a contrasting blue-lit profile. A smaller, front-facing image of Quaid in his checked shirt stands in the foreground, reinforcing the idea of competing identities.
Across the top, the enormous Japanese 「トータル・リコール」 title contains a montage of film scenes tinted fiery orange and red. Beneath it, paired portraits of Rachel Ticotin and Sharon Stone introduce the two women central to Quaid’s conflicting memories.
The bold grey tagline 「仕組まれた2つの現実。」, meaning “Two fabricated realities,” neatly expresses the film’s central dilemma. The spacious layout gives the intricate photomontage considerable impact.
Condition
Excellent. Light handling creases and minor surface marks are visible, particularly on the reverse. The front retains strong colour, with the large portrait and vivid title presenting beautifully. Once framed, this poster will display excellently.
