This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1966 for the first theatrical release of Water Cyborg (海底大戦争), also known internationally as Terror Beneath the Sea. Directed by Hajime Sato and produced by Toei, the film stars Shinichi Chiba (Sonny Chiba) alongside American actress Peggy Neal.
Printed for the film’s initial theatrical run, this scarce original B2(半裁)is highly sought after by collectors of Japanese sci-fi, Sonny Chiba material, and 1960s tokusatsu cinema—a superb vintage paper piece approaching six decades old.
Why this example is extraordinary (rarity & market)
Japanese B2s for Water Cyborg rarely surface in high grade, with demand driven by its cult crossover status as a Japanese-American co-production, the early international presence of Chiba, and its fantastical creature design that anticipates later kaiju and sci-fi productions.
Poster design
The artwork bursts with pulp sci-fi spectacle: a giant stone-faced monster looms over the sea, flanked by explosions, submarines, and helicopters. In the foreground, Chiba and Neal appear in diving gear, tense and ready for battle, while silver cyborg creatures emerge menacingly from the depths. The bold red Japanese title 「海底大戦争」 dominates the composition, with the English subtitle WATER CYBORG in stark white beneath. The collage-style layout perfectly captures the film’s hybrid of mystery, action, and camp futurism.
