Explore Japan Poster Shop’s specialist collection of original Japanese B3 movie posters, featuring rare and highly collectible theatrical and promotional artwork in one of Japan’s most distinctive smaller poster formats.
The Japanese B3 format (approximately 36 × 51 cm / 14 × 20 inches) measures roughly half the area of the standard Japanese B2 theatrical poster. Although smaller in size, original B3 posters occupy an important place in the history of Japanese cinema advertising, with many examples featuring distinctive layouts, unusual promotional information and artwork not found on their larger counterparts.
Of particular interest are Japanese B3 nakazuri posters (中吊り), produced for hanging displays inside trains and other public transport. These posters were designed to attract attention in busy urban environments and frequently incorporated bold typography, striking imagery and cinema-specific advertising details. Because many were intended for temporary promotional use, surviving original examples can be exceptionally difficult to acquire.
Our collection encompasses rare first-release Japanese B3 posters, original theatrical advertising, railway promotional material and unusual vintage designs, spanning classic Japanese cinema, international films, science fiction, horror and animation.
Among the celebrated films represented in this format are Star Wars, alongside important works of Japanese cinema such as Onibaba (1964) and Floating Clouds (1955). Original B3 posters for major cinematic releases can be particularly desirable when they feature alternative artwork, unusual compositions or rare period advertising information.
Unlike modern reproductions, these are authentic Japanese promotional posters produced for their original advertising campaigns. Some examples were displayed in cinemas, railway carriages or other public spaces, while others survive in exceptional unused condition.
The compact B3 format is also particularly attractive to collectors seeking rare original Japanese cinema artwork in a practical size for framing and display. Despite their smaller dimensions, the historical significance and scarcity of certain B3 designs can make them highly desirable additions to serious collections.
Every poster offered by Japan Poster Shop is an authentic original, carefully sourced in Japan and individually catalogued. We do not sell reproductions. All posters are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, with worldwide DHL Express shipping available from our gallery in Tokyo.
