This is an original Japanese press-sheet / speed poster printed in 1964 for the first Japanese release of Charade (シャレード), directed by Stanley Donen and starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant.
Film background
Released in 1963 and released in Japan soon after, Charade is the definitive “romantic thriller”: a chic Paris-set mystery that blends suspense, comedy and star-powered glamour in a way few films have ever matched. Audrey Hepburn plays Regina Lampert, a young widow who discovers her husband was not who he claimed to be—and that a fortune has vanished, leaving her hunted by a trio of dangerous men. Cary Grant plays the enigmatic Peter Joshua (or does he?), who keeps changing his identity as the danger escalates.
Directed by Stanley Donen (Singin’ in the Rain, Funny Face), Charade is famous for its razor-sharp tone control: genuine tension and violence sit alongside witty dialogue, immaculate fashion, and postcard-perfect Paris locations. It remains one of Hepburn’s most stylish films and one of Cary Grant’s most beloved late-career performances—often cited as one of the best “Hitchcock films Hitchcock never made.”
Poster design
On the main panel, Hepburn appears in one of the film’s signature looks, turning with her headscarf and sunglasses in hand, set against a crisp colour block. The Japanese title “シャレード” sits in a sharp green title panel framed by pink border lines, while a bright portrait of Cary Grant and small running figure graphics emphasise the film’s playful “cat-and-mouse” chase. The reverse features an additional Charade image with a minimalist calendar-style layout—an eye-catching, period Japanese promotional touch rarely seen intact today.
This poster is in very good condition for its age. Colours remain vivid and the paper presents cleanly, with the expected original fold lines and light handling wear consistent with careful storage. Please refer to the photos—this is the exact poster you will receive.
