“Ghost in the Shell” (攻殻機動隊), Scarce Original Japanese Artpresto CYBERNETICS 5 Untrimmed Production‑Proof / Printer‑Control Sheet 1997, Large Format c. 78.5 × 59 cm Q145

Sale price $775.00

This is an original Japanese Artpresto large-format promotional sheet for Ghost in the Shell, produced in Japan in 1997 and preserved in an unusually revealing untrimmed production-proof / printer-control state. Rather than a standard finished wall poster, this example retains its wide raw factory margins, crop and registration marks, colour-control strip, and lower-margin production metadata.

The sheet is marked “ARTPRESTO 1997 MADE IN JAPAN” and carries the rights line ©1995 Masamune Shirow / Kodansha / Bandai Visual / MANGA ENTERTAINMENT. Artpresto was active in official character goods, posters, and specialty printed promotional material.

Dating and identification

The lower production margin contains printed technical information including CMYBk, “Job Name: koukaku_T_ap”, “Folder No.3 Top flat”, and the Japanese output line 出力日時:1997年06月06日(金)21時36分28秒 JST.

This identifies the sheet as a production-stage object connected to the print workflow. The Japanese term 出力日時 is best understood as output date/time, rather than a handwritten annotation or later seller description. The timestamp places the sheet on 6 June 1997 at 21:36:28 JST, in the same period as the broader 1997 Ghost in the Shell merchandising and promotional programme.

The retained margins are central to the object’s significance. The right edge shows a full vertical CMYK colour-control strip, while the upper and side edges preserve crop and alignment guides. These features would normally be outside the finished image area and removed or excluded from a standard trimmed poster. This example is an untrimmed printer-control or production-proof sheet.

The circular device at upper left reads “5 CYBERNETICS”, identifying this as the CYBERNETICS 5 design within Artpresto’s numbered Ghost in the Shell CYBERNETICS sequence. Publicly documented examples from related CYBERNETICS numbers suggest a broader numbered series, making this a scarce surviving example from that production group rather than a one-off retail issue.

Poster design

The composition is a densely layered cyberpunk montage centred on Major Motoko Kusanagi, shown in the foreground holding a compact firearm against a luminous mechanical landscape. Her figure is rendered in deep violet, red, and blue tones, merging human anatomy with synthetic surface and suggesting the film’s central tension between body, machine, and identity.

Behind her rises a pale cybernetic face, fractured by red circuit-like lines and partially overlaid with exposed mechanical structures. A futuristic city skyline occupies the upper left field, while a hovering rotor craft projects a vertical red beam downward, intensifying the sense of surveillance, intervention, and technological control.

At the right edge, the title GHOST IN THE SHELL appears in a tall vertical masthead over a dark, neon architectural ground. The typography is metallic and imposing, integrated with red linear circuitry and digital colour fragments. The overall design has the visual character of a late-1990s Japanese specialty print: saturated, reflective, highly graphic, and unmistakably tied to the cybernetic aesthetic of the franchise.

The sheet is printed on a metallic finished reflective substrate (not normal paper stock), with a pronounced sheen visible across both the image and the margins.

Why collectors prize this example

  • Original 1997 Japanese Artpresto production artefact: marked “ARTPRESTO 1997 MADE IN JAPAN” with period rights information for Ghost in the Shell.
  • Untrimmed printer-control state: retains wide factory margins, crop guides, registration features, colour bars, and workflow metadata normally absent from finished posters.
  • Timestamped production evidence: the lower margin records 6 June 1997, 21:36:28 JST, giving the sheet unusually specific documentary value.
  • CYBERNETICS 5 design: part of the desirable Artpresto CYBERNETICS sequence, with the upper-left roundel clearly identifying this numbered variant.
  • Major Motoko Kusanagi key imagery: a strong cybernetic composition combining Kusanagi, exposed machinery, a synthetic face, city architecture, aircraft, and vertical title treatment.
  • Specialty reflective presentation: the metallic-looking surface and production margins give the sheet a distinctive industrial quality closely aligned with the franchise’s visual language.
  • More than a standard poster: its importance lies not only in the printed image, but in the preserved evidence of manufacture, making it attractive to collectors of anime production material, Japanese promotional print culture, and cyberpunk ephemera.
