Original Japanese Crime, Yakuza & Film Noir Posters

Explore Japan Poster Shop’s extensive collection of original Japanese crime, yakuza and film noir movie posters, featuring rare and highly collectible theatrical artwork from some of the most influential crime films in cinema history.

From the shadowy world of classic film noir and Hollywood gangster cinema to the distinctive traditions of Japanese yakuza films, police thrillers and contemporary crime dramas, this collection celebrates the extraordinary visual history of crime cinema across Japan and the wider world.

Japanese crime cinema developed a particularly distinctive identity during the postwar period, with studios such as Nikkatsu and Toei producing celebrated gangster and yakuza films throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Directors including Seijun Suzuki, Kinji Fukasaku, Hideo Gosha and Takeshi Kitano helped redefine the genre through their innovative filmmaking, stylised violence and complex portrayals of the Japanese underworld.

Our collection includes original Japanese posters associated with legendary performers such as Ken Takakura, Bunta Sugawara, Meiko Kaji and Akira Kobayashi, alongside Japanese theatrical artwork for internationally acclaimed crime films, American film noir, European thrillers and modern gangster cinema.

From Battles Without Honor and Humanity (1973) and Branded to Kill (1967) to Sonatine (1993), Hana-bi (1997), The Godfather (1972), Goodfellas (1990) and Heat (1995), Japanese crime-film poster design encompasses an extraordinary variety of styles, from bold illustrated compositions and dramatic photographic montages to minimalist typography and striking colour palettes.

Our extensive holdings include original Japanese B2 and B1 theatrical posters, rare STB Tatekan formats, first-release examples, advance promotional designs and scarce vintage variants. Many early Japanese crime posters are increasingly difficult to acquire, particularly in exceptional condition, and represent an important chapter in the history of Japanese cinema and graphic design.

Every poster offered by Japan Poster Shop is an authentic original, carefully sourced in Japan and individually catalogued. We do not sell reproductions. All posters are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, with worldwide DHL Express shipping available from our gallery in Tokyo.
