“Tampopo” (タンポポ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1985, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N16
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1985 for the first theatrical release of Tampopo, Jûzô Itami’s beloved "ramen western" comedy.
Tampopo (タンポポ), directed by Jûzô Itami, is a cult Japanese film that masterfully blends satire, food-porn, and spaghetti western homage. Released in 1985, the movie follows a pair of truck drivers (Tsutomu Yamazaki and Ken Watanabe) who help a widowed ramen shop owner (Nobuko Miyamoto) transform her humble noodle restaurant into the finest in Tokyo. The central plot is interwoven with surreal, often hilarious vignettes that explore the sensual and cultural dimensions of food.
Hailed internationally as a comic masterpiece, Tampopo is widely regarded as one of Japan’s greatest food-themed films. It was a critical darling overseas and helped introduce international audiences to the quirks and charms of Japanese cinema in the 1980s.
Poster design
This striking B2-size poster features a bold pop-art illustration of the main characters—each holding a bowl of steaming ramen—set against a vivid yellow-orange gradient. The artwork is as playful and unconventional as the film itself, evoking both hand-drawn manga and graphic novel sensibilities. The title Tampopo is rendered in oversized, almost abstract red calligraphy, capturing the film’s irreverent tone.
