"Teorema", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1968, Ultra Rare, STB Size (51 x 145cm) N59

This towering STB (tatekan) poster—almost five feet tall—was printed only for the film’s first Japanese run in 1968 and issued in far smaller numbers than standard B2s. Surviving examples for sought-after titles such as Teorema are exceptionally scarce and prized by collectors.

Teorema (internationally retitled “Theorem”) is Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1968 allegorical drama starring Terence Stamp, Laura Betti, Silvana Mangano, Massimo Girotti and Anne Wiazemsky. A mysterious visitor seduces every member of an upper-middle-class Milanese household, then vanishes—leaving each radically transformed. Themes of divine incarnation, sexuality and bourgeois disintegration made the picture both controversial and influential. (Venice Film Festival, OCIC Award 1968.)

Poster design

• Bold, calligraphic kanji in sky-blue, green and plum cascade down the length of the sheet, framing a dream-like collage of the household’s “possessed” family.

• Pasolini’s name and cast are rendered vertically in fine typograph, preserving the Italian art-film aesthetic while matching Toho/Towa studio branding.

• The STB format allows the composition to breathe; full tatekan sheets like this were typically pasted outside major theatres and seldom saved.
