This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1968 for the first release of The Pit of Death.

The Pit of Death (Japanese title: 怪談おとし穴 Kaidan Otoshi Ana) is a 1968 Japanese horror/kaidan film directed by Kōji Shima (島耕二) and produced by Daiei Film. Set amid Tokyo’s post-war corporate boom, it stars Mikio Narita, Mayumi Nagisa, and Eiji Funakoshi in a chilling morality tale of ambition turned deadly.

The story follows Haruo Kuramoto, an up-and-coming executive who murders his pregnant lover to marry the company president’s daughter and secure his place in the boardroom. Believing he has hidden the body forever in a building shaft, Kuramoto soon hears typewriters clacking in empty offices, sobs echoing through elevator shafts, and sees a blood-streaked woman hanging upside-down in the darkness. As corporate success morphs into nightmare, guilt—and something far more supernatural—closes in for retribution.

Combining sleek modern settings with classic Japanese ghost-story aesthetics, The Pit of Death delivers an eerie blend of noir-style suspense and vengeful-spirit horror, making it a standout of late-1960s kaidan cinema.

It is over 57 years old!
